- 2 limes
- 100g (3¾ oz) caster sugar
- 3 tablespoons sweetened condensed milk
- 750ml (1¼ pints) water

- Wash limes thoroughly. Slice off the ends and slice into eight wedges. Place limes in a blender with the sugar, sweetened condensed milk, water and ice.
- Blend in an electric blender, pulsing 5 times. Strain through a fine sieve to remove rinds. Serve over ice.

I'm actually surprised I can type right now, after the alteration I made to this recipe. Instead of 3 cups water, I used 1 cup rum, 1 cup coconut water, and 1 cup water. Yowza! Lip-smackin, buzzed-before-you-know-it goodness. Saúde!-31 Aug 2007
Brazilian Lemonade is the creamiest and sweetest lemonade you will ever try! It is like summer in a cup!
Lemonade? But where are the lemons? .
Well, there aren’t any really, because Brazilian Lemonade is usually made with limes.
But then, shouldn’t it be called “limeade”?, you might be asking yourself. I guess it could, but it usually isn’t. Here’s the deal: you can call it whatever you want and you can even use lemons instead of limes in your lemonade. Whatever makes you happy!
So let’s talk about what makes this lemonade (limeade? potato, potahto!) so special. And the answer is: sweet condensed milk!
Yes! Brazil’s favorite ingredient is here again, making this lemonade a very sweet and creamy, almost smoothie-like treat.
If you go to any restaurant in Brazil and you ask what is the best selling non-alcoholic drink, the answer is going to be…. Guaraná, Brazilian’s favorite soda. But Brazilian Lemonade, or Limonada Suíça (which translates to “Swiss Lemonade”), comes in a close second!
However, even though Brazilians call it Limonada Suíça, you won’t be able to find a similar version in Switzerland. But why the name, then?
Honestly? Nobody knows! ? It’s another mystery, just like the “Torta Holandesa” (“Dutch Pie”) or the Portuguese Pizza. Both are insanely delicious, but the titles make no sense whatsoever.
I guess you can say Brazilians are weird. Myself included!
Now, you will find a thousand and one versions of Brazilian Lemonade on the internet. Some of then call for a few tablespoons of sweet condensed milk and some omit it all together. DO NOT TRUST THESE PEOPLE. ?
The real Brazilian Lemonade will take a whole can of sweet condensed milk. I know it might sound excessive and overly sweet, but since we leave the lime’s peel in most of the limes, it ends up being necessary so you don’t end up with a bitter drink.
Another trick to prevent bitterness is to blend the limes and water for only 10 seconds. That’s it! No more. It is enough time to extract the juice and some of the bitterness from the peel. Any more than that and you won’t be able to drink your lemonade, even if you add five cans of sweet condensed milk!
Also, the fresher the limes, the better. And, even though we are leaving the peel in some of the limes, you gotta cut off the white part from the inside. That’s where most of the bitterness is and it does not belong in our awesome drink.
So, what did we learn today? If a recipe omits the sweet condensed milk or asks for mint, ginger or honey, that is not a Brazilian Lemonade, or at least not the Limonada Suíça kind. That’s another kind of lemonade. Delicious? Maybe! But it’s not the “suíça”.
Oh, but what if I want to add alcohol? Then, it is called “batida”. But we’ll get to that on a future post! ?
This Brazilian lemonade s goes by a couple other names too. Limonada suíça is one and the other is Brazilian limeade. I know you're thinking, "why lemonade if lemons are used." Well, it's called lemonade because in Brazil the popular lime is known as Tahitian lemon.
The word "Swiss"in Swiss lemonade comes from Switzerland. Years ago they used to import condensed milk from there, hence the name.
Limonada suíça is a popular drink in Brazil. It's a little tart and tangy, a bit creamy and frothy thanks to the condensed milk. And of course it's sweet.
It really is the perfect drink for summer get togethers. If you love frothy, sweet and tart drinks then you are going to love this!
My husband studied abroad in Brazil for a year and Brazilian lemonade one was his favorite drink as well as the Batida . It's basically the same drink as Brazilian limeade but with coconut milk and alcohol.
Not to mention, it's very easy to make. Creamy drinks are my absolute favorite. There are many ways to make this refreshing drink. I'll show you how I make it.
How to avoid a bitter taste in your lemonade
When we blend the lemon in a blender, an enzymatic process begins, converting some phytochemicals of the lemon into limonin, a compound that has a very bitter flavor.
This bitter taste, when in small quantities, actually helps to balance the sour taste of the lime, making the lemonade even more delicious. However, this enzymatic process increases more and more over time, consequently making your lemonade more and more bitter. This is true even for the traditional lemonade.
So, I will list here a few things that help to avoid a bitter taste:
- As I mentioned before, remove the pith in the center of the lime, and blend your limes with water for just a few seconds. The more the lime is processed, the more substances are released and the greater the enzymatic processing that causes the bitter taste (limonin) will be.
- Keep your lemonade in the refrigerator, as the low temperature slows down this process.
- If possible, place the juice in a jar with lid. The oxidation of the nutrients gives the lemonade an off-taste, and oxygen speeds up this process.
- Use a mixture of lime juice and whole lime. Juicing one lime will help to balance the flavor from the blended limes.
- Consume your Brazilian Lemonade in less than 5 hours. Most scientific articles I've read indicate that a lemonade can be stored for up to 10 hours without the taste being significantly compromised. However, as the Brazilian Lemonade is made with blended lemons (thus increasing the amount of limonin to be produced) I advise consuming it as soon as possible.
The characteristic flavor of Brazilian Lemonade is due to the use of the whole lemon and the addition of condensed milk. However, if you plan to consume it in more than 5 hours, I advise you to squeeze all the lemons and use only the juice, instead of blending the whole lemon.

How to make it
About the ingredients, you just want to make sure you’re using fresh and really juicy limes. Wash well the skin before making this lemonade: we’re using the zest of all limes.
Zest the limes grating them or using a sharp peeler. You will probably still get a bit of the white skin under the green, but a tiny amount is totally ok and won’t make it bitter.
After zesting, peel the limes and remove all white pith. I cut the ends off, then cut the lime in half close to where I can see the pith. Watch the video to understand better how I do it.
Blend the peeled limes, zest and water for 30 to 40 seconds. Pour the mixture through a fine-mesh strainer. Press the lime pulp with a spoon to get all the juice out of it. Discard the pulp.
Blend the lime juice with sugar, condensed milk and ice cubes for another 30 to 40 seconds, or until the lemonade looks well mixed.
Serve it over ice right away, or store inside the fridge covered for 1 to 2 hours.

Brazilian Lemonade is Made With LIMES
Brazilian Lemonade sounds backwards too. It is called “lemonade” but there are no lemons in it – just limes. Don’t as me why – I haven’t the foggiest!
What I do know is it is ridiculously good and that one drink will have you hooked for life. Sorry, but at least I warned you?
How To Make The BEST Brazilian Lemonade (Like Tucanos)
Some versions of this recipe call for blending limes together with the water etc. I find that makes the drink bitter most of the time. My version is simpler and is dependably amazing.

Lactose Free Options
- You can use a lactose free milk to make sweetened condensed milk with a recipe like this one
- Nestle brand makes a product called La Lechera Lactose-Free Sweet Condensed Milk
Dairy Free Options
- Substitute 1/2 cup of canned coconut milk for the sweetened condensed milk. Taste the finished product and add a little bit more sugar if the drink is still too tart.

Place all the ingredients in a blender. Add 4 cups cold water and blend on high speed until limes are slightly chopped. Strain into a pitcher and then, with the strainer still resting above the pitcher, slowly pour about 1 more cup water (depending on how sweet you want the drink) through the strainer over the lime pieces to extract all the residual sugar and juice.
Note: Nutritional analysis is per cup.
Strain the Brazilian Lemonade
Then the secret ingredient: sweetened condensed milk. You can often buy mini cans in the latin section of the grocery store. This recipes needs about 1 1/2 little cans. Since you’ll probably want to double this recipe, that’s 3 cans. They also sell a squeeze bottle in the Latin foods section which is also helpful. Or just open a regular sized can and make some chocolate sauce with the leftovers!
The sweetened condensed milk makes the drink itself look like milk, which is sometimes confusing to guests! It’s unique and so crazy good that I love serving this to people who have never had it before.
